A Simple Way to Teach Kids Where Their Water Comes From
Ask most children where water comes from, and you'll usually get one of two answers: "the tap" or "a bottle." Both are true, as far as they go - but neither really explains anything, and that's a shame, because water is one of the easiest scientific concepts in the world to make tangible for kids. You don't need a school trip or a science kit. You need about twenty minutes and a jug.
Why it's worth the twenty minutes
Most sustainability lessons for children are abstract - recycling symbols, plastic in the ocean, ideas that are hard for a seven-year-old to connect to anything they actually do. Water is different, because it's something they interact with dozens of times a day: drinking it, washing with it, watching it come out of a tap. That everyday familiarity makes it a genuinely good entry point for building habits that last, rather than a lecture that goes in one ear and out the other.
It also matters practically. Children who understand why a reusable bottle matters are far more likely to actually use one - at school, on the way to football, wherever - rather than treating it as one more thing a grown-up nags them about.
A simple weekend project
Here's a version that works for most primary-school-aged children, and takes about as long as making a cup of tea:
- Start with the question, not the answer. Ask them where they think the water in the tap comes from before you explain anything. Kids' guesses are usually more interesting than you'd expect, and it makes the explanation land better afterwards.
- Trace it back, simply. Rain falls, collects in rivers and reservoirs, gets treated to make it safe, then travels through pipes to your tap. You don't need to be a hydrologist - a rough diagram on the back of an envelope is genuinely enough.

- Give them a job. Refilling the family jug, checking the filter, or being in charge of filling water bottles before school gives the lesson somewhere to live day-to-day, rather than being a one-off conversation.
