6 Creative Ways to Upcycle Plastic Water Bottles

by Kiyara Thring

Plastic water bottles are a major source of waste, with billions ending up in landfills and oceans each year. While recycling is a good solution, upcycling is even better! Upcycling is the process of turning old or unwanted items into something new and useful. In this blog post, we'll share how you can prevent plastic waste from ending up in unwanted places by giving you six fun and creative ways to upcycle your old water bottle.

Create a Hanging Garden:

Instead of throwing away your old water bottle, use it to create a beautiful hanging garden. Cut off the bottom of the bottle and turn it upside down. Fill the bottom with soil and plant your favourite herbs or flowers. Hang the bottle upside down using string or wire, and watch your garden grow.

Make a Piggy Bank:

Teach your kids the importance of saving by making a piggy bank out of an old water bottle. Cut a small slit in the side of the bottle and cover it with a piece of duct tape. Decorate the bottle with stickers or paint and start saving those pennies!

DIY Bird Feeder:

If you love bird watching, then this upcycling idea is perfect for you. Cut out a small window in the middle of your water bottle and fill it with birdseed. Make two small holes at the top of the bottle and attach string or wire to hang it from a tree. Now you can sit back, relax and watch the birds come to feed.

Create a Self-Watering Planter:

Do you have a hard time remembering to water your plants? Use an old water bottle to create a self-watering planter. Cut the bottle in half and poke small holes in the cap. Fill the bottom half with water and place it upside down in the top half. Add soil and plant your favourite herbs or flowers. The soil will absorb water from the bottom half, keeping your plants hydrated.

Desk Organiser:

Cut off the top of your water bottle and use the bottom portion to create a desk organiser. Simply clean the bottle thoroughly, decorate it with paint or markers if desired, and use it to store pencils, pens, and other small office supplies.

Seed Starter:

Cut off the bottom of your water bottle and use it as a seed starter for your garden. Fill the bottle with soil and plant your seeds, then place it in a sunny spot and water as needed. Once your plants have grown, you can transplant them into your garden or a larger pot.

Upcycling your old water bottle is a great way to reduce your waste and gives you a chance to exercise your creativity and make something new. From planters and bird feeders to desk organisers and seed starters, there are so many ways to give your old water bottle a second life. So the next time you're about to throw away your used water bottle, think about the possibilities and get creative!
