The Environmental Cost of Bottled Water

Over the past decade or so, the bottled water industry has exploded. It is estimated to have tripled in size over this period, with a massive array of brands now competing for consumers' attention across the sector. The most notable brands in the industry, such as Volvic, Evian or Vittel for example, are now far from the only recognisable bottled water brands in the world. They have been joined by competitors like Smart Water, Vitamin Water, and Saka to name but a few. According to insinkerator.co.uk, 200 billion bottles of water are consumed globally every year - 176 billion of which are not adequately recycled. In the UK, we consume 300 million plastic bottles of water every year. There has...

The Phox Alkaline Water Filter

The Phox alkaline water filter has a five-stage filtration process with each layer adding to the quality and taste of the water. Layer 1 of our Alkaline Water Filter: The first layer consists of non-woven fabrics which remove any solid substances like rust, mud or soil from the water. Despite the fact that much of the our tap water systems in the developed world have already removed elements such as mud and soil to meet water quality standards, this first layer is an important first step in the filtration process because it removes the most basic unwanted contaminants should they be present. Layer 2 of our Alkaline Water Filter: The second layer of the filter is made up of alkaline...

What is Alkaline Water?

What is Alkaline Water? Alkaline water is water that has a pH level greater than 7.0, making it less acidic than standard tap water. Water is one of the most important resources on the planet. In much of the developed world we are extremely fortunate to have access to clean water, something which is still despairingly unavailable for more than 650 million people across the world. Despite the comparably exceptional standard of drinking water we have in the western world, the water coming through your taps can often have a hardness and slight odour to it. Have you ever had a glass of tap water after drinking bottled or filtered water and realised that tap water has a very distinctive...

The Financial Cost of Bottled Water

The bottled water industry is worth more than £2bn per year in the UK. Due to the explosion of the market over the past ten years there are now a plethora of water brands available to consumers. In the midst of this growth it can be easily forgotten that for most of us in this part of the world, clean water comes through taps within our homes.  Thames Water estimates that 2 litres of tap water costs 0.2p and on average 2L of branded bottled water costs around 84p. Based on these figures bottled water costs 420x more than tap water. Apply the same multiplier to something like beer and a pint would cost around £1,350! There are masses of...
